The house Kanye's mother bought, and the fight to keep it
South Shore, Chicago, Illinois
![]()
Donda West bought a 1905 cottage in South Shore in 1981 and raised her son in it. Long after he had left, a nonprofit took the house on to make an arts incubator, then announced in 2017 that it was too far gone and would come down instead. The demolition never happened. A company in his name bought it back in 2018 for $225,000 and pulled a renovation permit the following spring. It is pinned to the block rather than the door, because someone still owns it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
