The Highland Park parade shooting
Central Avenue, Highland Park, Illinois
Meme Star27 · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A gunman fired from a rooftop into the Fourth of July parade here in 2022, killing seven people and wounding dozens on a street full of families with children. Illinois had a red flag law on the books and police had been called to the shooter's home years earlier. The gun was still bought legally. The parade route runs through the middle of a town that had considered itself about as safe as an American suburb gets.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
