The Hawthorne Smoke Shop, Al Capone's Cicero casino
1926
Cicero, Illinois
Capone moved his operation out to Cicero to get clear of the Chicago police, and this gambling house was where the money came in. Frankie Pope ran the horse book and Pete Penovich Jr. ran the games of chance: roulette, craps, blackjack and chuck-a-luck. Raids closed it repeatedly and it kept reopening, taking in about half a million dollars over two years. Leslie Shumway, the cashier who counted that money, later testified about it in court.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
