The Great Swamp Fight
1675
South Kingstown, Rhode Island
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
In December 1675 a colonial army marched into the frozen Great Swamp and burned the Narragansett winter fort, killing hundreds, many of them women and children, and pulling the tribe into King Philip's War on the losing side. It was among the bloodiest days of colonial America and is remembered very differently depending on who is doing the remembering. A granite shaft stands in the woods where the fort stood.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
