Two airliners left Los Angeles three minutes apart on the morning of June 30, 1956 and collided at 21,000 feet over the canyon, killing all 128 people aboard both. Neither was being watched by anybody: outside the airways the sky was uncontrolled, and both captains had drifted off course toward the same view. The wreckage fell onto Temple Butte and into the gorge, in country so broken that recovering it took helicopters and Swiss mountain climbers.
