A local lawyer, E. E. Callaway, worked out that Eden had been here: the Apalachicola was the river that went out of the garden, its four tributaries the four rivers of Genesis, and the rare Torreya tree on these bluffs was the gopher wood Noah used. He ran for governor and led tours. The bluffs really are strange, Appalachian plants growing hundreds of miles south of where they belong.
