Margarethe Schurz had studied under Froebel in Germany, and in 1856 she started a small German-speaking class for her daughter and a few neighbours' children in Watertown: the first kindergarten in the United States. Her husband Carl became a general, a senator and an interior secretary, and she has the better claim on how most Americans start school. The building was moved and now sits on the grounds of the Octagon House.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
