The Farm, the hippie commune that worked
1971
Summertown, Tennessee
Three hundred people followed Stephen Gaskin out of San Francisco in a caravan of school buses and settled Tennessee woodland. Unlike almost every commune of its era it is still there: its midwives wrote the book on home birth, its soy dairy fed the vegetarian movement, and a few hundred residents remain.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
