The Evergreens Cemetery and the six unnamed women of the Triangle fire

Incorporated in 1849 after New York state cleared the way for burial grounds outside the city, the Evergreens holds more than half a million people across 225 acres of rolling hills. Six women killed in the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist fire were buried here unidentified, and the historian Michael Hirsch finished four years of research in 2011 by putting a name to every one of them. The tap dancer Bill Robinson and the saxophonist Lester Young are buried here as well.
