Chinese labourers brought in after the war to replace freedmen in the fields left them almost at once and opened groceries in Black neighbourhoods that white merchants would not serve. Classed as neither white nor Black, they were barred from white schools, a case from Rosedale reached the Supreme Court in 1927 and lost. At the peak there were several hundred family stores. Supermarkets have taken nearly all of them.
