Deane Winthrop was the sixth son of John Winthrop, governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the oldest part of this Shirley Street house went up around 1675 with an addition in 1696. It is among the oldest wood frame houses in the country and is described as the longest continuously inhabited home in the United States. The Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association owns it and opens it by appointment.
