In July 1951 Harvey Clark Jr., a Black bus driver and war veteran, moved his family into a Cicero apartment. A crowd that grew into the thousands wrecked the building over several nights and Governor Adlai Stevenson sent in the National Guard. A Cook County grand jury then indicted the building's owner and the family's NAACP lawyer rather than anyone in the mob. Fifteen years later a civil rights march into Cicero still needed Guard protection to get through.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
