Charles Bennett came home from the Pacific with paralysis and served Jacksonville in the House from 1949 to 1993, answering every roll call from June 1951 until the day he retired. He wrote the Code of Ethics for Government Service that Congress adopted in 1958, and he is the reason Fort Caroline National Memorial and the Timucuan preserve exist at all. He also pushed to put the naval station at Mayport. The Wonderwood Drive crossing of the Intracoastal was dedicated to him in 2004.
