The Cambridge movement and the riots of 1963

In 1963 Black residents of Cambridge, led by Gloria Richardson and the local SNCC chapter, protested against segregated public places and for equal jobs and housing. After clashes between protesters, white crowds and police, the governor declared martial law on 14 June and sent in the National Guard, which stayed in the town for about a year. Cambridge saw unrest again in July 1967, after a speech by H. Rap Brown, when Brown was wounded by a deputy and a fire destroyed part of the Black business district on Pine Street.
