The Boldt Decision, half the salmon for the tribes
1974
Tacoma, Washington
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Judge George Boldt read the 1855 treaties to mean tribes were owed half the salmon harvest. The ruling followed years of fish-ins in which Native fishers were beaten and arrested for netting their own rivers. It was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1979.
