The Big Duck
1931
Flanders, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A duck farmer built a shop to sell ducks and eggs in the shape of a duck, twenty feet of it, wire and concrete over a frame, with Ford taillights for eyes that glow red at night. Architects adopted it as the name for the whole idea of a building that is a sign of itself: a structure shaped like what it sells is, forever now, a duck.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
