The Battle of Pocomoke Sound
1635
Pocomoke Sound, Maryland and Virginia
On 23 April 1635 William Claiborne's pinnace Cockatrice fought two Maryland ships, the St. Helen and the St. Margaret, in Pocomoke Sound and lost. Three Virginians and one Marylander were killed in what is usually called the first naval battle between Englishmen in North America. The fight was over Kent Island, which Claiborne held and Lord Baltimore claimed. Maryland took the island by force in 1638.
