The Battle of Blair Mountain
August-September 1921
Logan County, West Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Ten thousand armed miners marched on the southern coalfields and fought a private army across a mountain ridge for five days. It is the largest labour uprising in American history and the only time the government has bombed its own citizens from the air. Federal troops ended it. Union membership collapsed for a decade.
