The banana split
1904
Latrobe, Pennsylvania
Edward Allen Lim · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist split a banana lengthwise, laid three scoops in the trough and charged a dime, double the going rate for a sundae. Students from the college up the road spread it, and within a decade it was on soda fountain menus nationwide.
