Terrace on the Park was the World's Fair heliport
1964
Corona, Queens, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Port Authority raised this pavilion on columns for the 1964 World's Fair and put a landing deck on the roof so helicopters could bring visitors in from Manhattan instead of leaving them on the Grand Central Parkway. Robert Moses wanted a restaurant underneath the pad and got one. The helicopters left when the fair did. The building has been a catering hall ever since, still standing above the park on its legs.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
