Terlingua, quicksilver camp turned chili cook-off
1903
Brewster County, Texas
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A quicksilver mining camp that supplied much of America's mercury for two wars and emptied when the company went bankrupt in 1942. Its ruins now hold a few hundred people and the world's best-known chili cook-off, which split in 1983 into two rival cook-offs held the same weekend a mile apart.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
