Sitting on.3995 going into the last day, a figure that rounds up to.400, he refused to sit out and went six for eight in a doubleheader, finishing at.406. Nobody has done it since. He lost nearly five seasons flying combat in two wars, and hit a home run in his final at-bat at Fenway in 1960, then would not come out to tip his cap.
