Sylvanus Thayer's birthplace, the father of West Point
1785
Braintree, Massachusetts

Sylvanus Thayer was born in this 1720 farmhouse in 1785 and lived here until he was eight. As superintendent of West Point he rebuilt American military education so thoroughly that he is still called its father. A steel company bought the land in 1958 and, rather than knock the house down, had it taken apart and moved. The Braintree Historical Society runs it as a museum.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
