Smart Studios, where Nevermind was rehearsed

Butch Vig and Steve Marker opened a studio in a plain building on East Washington in 1983 to record local bands, and ended up recording the sound of the next decade. Nirvana came here in 1990 for the sessions that became the template for Nevermind, which Vig went on to produce. Smashing Pumpkins, L7, Tad and Killdozer all cut records in the same rooms. Vig and Marker then formed Garbage in the building and it became their studio instead. It is still a working studio under a different name.
