Siesta Key's quartz sand
1907
Siesta Key, Florida
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
The sand here is about 99 percent quartz, ground down from the Appalachians and carried here over millions of years, with almost no shell or coral in it. Because quartz does not hold heat it stays cool enough to walk on barefoot at midday, which is the part visitors actually notice.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
