She grew up in a Bootheel cotton town, taught music in a St. Louis elementary school and sang jingles for McDonald's before moving to Los Angeles, where she spent two years as a backing singer on Michael Jackson's Bad tour. Her first album was rejected, shelved and remade, and then sold seven million copies.
