January 1925
Alaska
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Diphtheria broke out in Nome in winter with no way in. Twenty mushers and about 150 dogs relayed antitoxin 674 miles in five and a half days at temperatures near minus fifty. Balto got the statue. Togo's team ran the longest and most dangerous leg.
