Sea Gate, the city's first gated community

The western tip of the island was Norton's Point in the mid 1800s, a pier, a hotel and a casino run under the name of the Tammany politician Michael Norton, and the place Boss Tweed went to ground after escaping jail in 1875. The Norton's Point Land Company bought everything west of West 37th Street in the 1890s and sold lots to Vanderbilt, Dodge and Morgan money. In 1899 the homeowners bought the ninety acres outright, fenced the perimeter and hung gates on it, which made this the first gated community in New York City.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
