San Andreas Lake, the valley that gave the fault its name

The long straight trough holding this reservoir was carved by the fault itself, and when the geologist Andrew Lawson mapped the break in 1895 he named it after this valley. Eleven years later the same fault tore across the peninsula and levelled San Francisco, and Lawson led the state commission that reported on it. Commuters on Interstate 280 drive along the rift for miles without generally being told what the shape of the ground means.
