Walmart's founder held a pilot's licence and flew his own secondhand planes out of Bentonville's little airfield, now Louise M. Thaden Field. He scouted store sites from the cockpit, reading town growth and traffic from the air, and said he had picked hundreds of Walmart locations that way. When the board pressed him to hire a professional pilot he refused. He owned nineteen planes over his lifetime and flew himself between stores for decades.
