Rookwood Pottery, founded because no one would hire her
1880
Cincinnati, Ohio
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Maria Longworth Nichols founded it because no one would let a woman run a pottery, and it became the most celebrated art pottery in America, winning the grand prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Its tile still lines subway stations and bars around the country.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
