Rondo Days, the festival that keeps a bulldozed neighbourhood on the calendar
1982
Saint Paul, Minnesota
Interstate 94 was cut straight through Rondo in the late 1950s and 1960s, taking hundreds of homes and the business strip that went with them. Floyd Smaller and Marvin Anderson started this July festival in 1982 so that the people scattered by the freeway would have a fixed date and a fixed place to come back to. It is now the largest African American festival in Minnesota, held near the ground the highway took.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
