Plumb Beach, the squatter island Robert Moses joined to Brooklyn
1938

Plumb Beach sat on its own island, cut off from Sheepshead Bay by Hog Creek, and crossing meant wading or paying for a ferry ride of about forty feet that was advertised as the shortest in the world. By the First World War most of the people living there were squatters, and by the 1930s around ninety five families were paying rent to one of two men who each claimed the ground. The 1938 hurricane flattened what was left of the shanties, Hog Creek was filled in for the Belt Parkway, and the island became part of Brooklyn.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
