The only lodging on the canyon floor, designed by Mary Colter in native stone and cottonwood so it would look like it had grown there. Everything in it arrives by mule or on foot, a mile below the rim and nine miles from the nearest road, and everything that leaves goes the same way, including the mail, which is franked to say so. Beds are allocated by lottery more than a year ahead. The lemonade at the canteen is the most talked about drink in the national park system for reasons anybody who has walked up from the river understands.
