Patton Park, the city park that turned into an airstrip in 1967

Landowner Jacques Baby left these 93 acres to Detroit on the condition that the city never repurpose them, and the land returns to his descendants if it does. The park was dedicated in the early 1950s and named for George Patton, and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands came to the opening of its recreation centre as a Dutch thank you. During the uprising of July 1967 the National Guard camped here and graded a temporary landing strip on the grass so helicopters could fly in ammunition and supplies over streets that ground convoys could not use.
