Notre Dame, the forward pass and the Four Horsemen
1913
Notre Dame, Indiana

A small Catholic school nobody took seriously beat Army in 1913 by throwing the ball, a legal but barely used play that Gus Dorais and Knute Rockne had drilled all summer on a beach in Ohio. Rockne came back as coach and won at a rate nobody has matched. A sportswriter watched his 1924 backfield and wrote the sentence about the Four Horsemen, and the school became the thing American Catholics followed on the radio.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
