Norristown Farm Park, the asylum farm patients worked until 1975

Pennsylvania bought this ground in the 1870s for the state hospital at Norristown, and until 1975 the patients grew the crops and kept the animals on it, because working the farm was held to speed their recovery. The state then reversed itself, deciding the labour did nothing for anyone and that buying food outright was cheaper. In 1980 the 690 acres passed to the Department of Agriculture and opened as a public park. The four winged dairy barn and the milk house are still standing.
