Newark Symphony Hall, built as the Mosque

The Shriners spent more than two million dollars on this building in 1925 and called it Salaam Temple, though Newark called it the Mosque for the next forty years. Frank Grad designed it with marble columns, gold leaf and Greek and Egyptian motifs around a 3,500 seat auditorium. It became Newark Symphony Hall in 1964 and the main hall now carries the name of Sarah Vaughan, who was born in Newark in 1924, sang and played organ in the Mount Zion Baptist choir from the age of twelve, and left Arts High School to sing for a living.
