Nederland, the Dutch colony the railroad recruited
1897
Nederland, Texas
Stilwell's railroad was built largely on Dutch money, and in 1897 its land agents laid out a town on the line and recruited families from Holland to farm it and work it. Most of those families moved on within a generation, but the name held. The town keeps a forty foot windmill replica in Tex Ritter Park, along with the boots and stage clothes of Ritter, the singing cowboy who spent his childhood here.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
