The house went up around 1878 at Pilot Town, a settlement of harbor pilots near the mouth of the St. Johns, and Broward bought it in 1897 as a summer place for his wife and their nine children. Before politics he was a Duval County sheriff and a steamboat captain whose tug Three Friends ran guns to Cuban rebels. Elected governor of Florida in 1904, he made draining the Everglades state policy, and Broward County was later named for him. The house was added to the National Register in 1972.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
