Mother Featherlegs' monument
1964
Niobrara County, south of Lusk, Wyoming

Charlotte Shepard ran a roadhouse on the Cheyenne to Deadwood stage road in ruffled pantalettes that earned her the name Mother Featherlegs, and was murdered for her gold in 1879. In 1964 the town of Lusk raised a granite marker at the site, believed to be the only monument on a public road in America to a woman of her profession. Getting there still takes ten miles of dirt, which feels right.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
