In 1833 General William H. Sumner and a group of investors formed the East Boston Company to turn Noddle's Island into housing and industry, and steam ferries began running from this square to Rowe's Wharf. It is East Boston's oldest commercial centre, named for Samuel Maverick, one of the first colonists in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Maverick Station on the Blue Line sits at the middle of it.
