Loring, the bomber base at the top of the map
1953
Limestone, Maine
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Strategic Air Command put its biggest East Coast bomber base in Aroostook County because it was the closest American soil to Moscow over the pole, and for forty years B-52s sat here on alert with the weapons that ended the world in every planning document. The base closed in 1994 and took a fifth of the county's economy with it. The giant arch hangar still dominates the flatlands, rented out in pieces. Phish played the runway twice.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
