Long Beach Poly and the earthquake that rewrote school building codes
1933
Long Beach, California
The 6.4 quake of 10 March 1933 hit at 5:54 in the evening and wrecked school buildings across Long Beach, Poly among them. Because classes had let out, the death toll stayed near 120 rather than in the thousands, and California passed the Field Act a month later requiring schools to be built to resist earthquakes. Poly, founded in 1895, has since sent more players to the NFL than any other high school in the country.
