Lincoln Park and the Coast, Newark's jazz quarter

Lincoln Park is one of the three commons laid out in colonial Newark, and the fashionable blocks around it turned in the early twentieth century into an entertainment district known as the Coast, named after the Barbary Coast in San Francisco. It held the jazz rooms and the red light trade at once. The district went onto the National Register in 1984, and since 2006 a July music festival on the park has drawn crowds in the tens of thousands.
