La Peña, opened on Shattuck by exiles from Pinochet's Chile
1975
Berkeley, California
Latin American exiles and Berkeley allies opened La Peña on Shattuck Avenue in 1975, two years after the coup that put Augusto Pinochet in power. It became a base for the opposition in exile and a stage for the music that travelled with it. It still runs concerts, classes and community programmes in South Berkeley.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
