Kingston burned as New York's first capital

New York wrote its first constitution here and seated its first senate, and the British came upriver and burned the town to the ground within months, every building but one. It was rebuilt in the same limestone, which is why the four corners of its old crossroads still have a pre-Revolutionary stone house on each.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
