Keweenaw copper, the rush before California gold
1845
Hancock, Michigan
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The only place on earth where pure native copper occurs in quantity, mined by Indigenous people for 7,000 years before the first American rush, which predates California's by three years. The Quincy shaft goes down 9,260 feet on the incline, and a 1913 strike ended with 73 people crushed to death in a doorway after someone falsely shouted fire.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
