Kennedy proposes the Peace Corps on the Michigan Union steps
1960
Michigan Union, State Street and South University Avenue, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Late on 14 October 1960, campaigning and running behind schedule, Kennedy stopped on the steps of this student union and asked the crowd how many of them would give years of their lives working in another country. The idea he floated without a written speech became the Peace Corps, signed into being by executive order the following March. A brass marker set into the steps records where he stood. The union building itself dates to 1917.
