The Clark Thread Company of Paisley put up two mills here in 1875 and two more in 1890, and Nairn began making linoleum in 1886, which brought thousands of Scottish and Irish workers across to a town of four square miles. They brought football with them, formed works teams and played on ground squeezed between the mills. A century later the same town produced John Harkes, Tony Meola and Tab Ramos, all three of whom played for the United States at the 1990 World Cup, which is how a New Jersey mill town ended up calling itself Soccer Town USA.
